According to the motto '1 network. 1 timetable.1 ticket.', the state of Bavaria, the city of Munich and ten districts work together in the MVV. The task: to coordinate the timetables of all lines and offer an attractive fare system. Travelers should be able to use all means of transport in the MVV area with a single MVV ticket and benefit from well-coordinated transfer options and timetables. In fact, a public transport association is probably the best platform for cooperation between transport companies and the public sector, with the association company coordinating the cooperation. A sensible distribution of work between the partners creates synergies that make attractive local public transport possible in the first place.
MVV GmbH is responsible for the coordination of all network partners, including the shareholders and over 50 transport companies that provide transportation services in the MVV. The tasks of MVV GmbH are planning, regional buses, marketing, fares and transport research. The association designs the joint MVV tariff, distributes the revenue among the transport companies, plans current and future services, provides information about its services, advertises and conducts transport and market research.
The city of Munich, the city of Rosenheim and the districts of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Dachau, Ebersberg, Erding, Freising, Fürstenfeldbruck, Miesbach, München Land, Rosenheim Land and Starnberg define the network area, which covers well over 5,000 km2. Parts of the districts of Landsberg am Lech, Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Weilheim-Schongau, Aichach-Friedberg, Kelheim and Mühldorf are also integrated. In total, over 250 municipalities with around 3.4 million inhabitants belong to MVV. In 2019 - shortly before coronavirus - MVV recorded 737 million passengers.
